Summary

A smoldering tale of romance and revenge set in the world of the New York Times best seller Dawn of the Arcana

Legend says that a sacred beast appears in the time of a great king…

Ajin are people who bear the attributes of beasts, and in this kingdom Ajin men are forced to serve in the military and Ajin women in the brothels。 The Ajin boys who show signs of special abilities are conscripted to serve in the imperial palace as beast servants—status symbols and shields for their royal masters, to be kept or discarded on a whim。 When Rangetsu’s twin brother Sogetsu showed signs of such abilities, he was ripped from her arms and given to Prince Tenyou as a beast servant, where he quickly fell victim to bloody royal intrigues。 Now in a world that promises only bitterness, Rangetsu’s one hope is to disguise herself as a man and find a way into the palace to avenge her brother!

Rangetsu knows she must keep a low profile in the palace if she’s to have any hope of tracking down her brother’s killer。 But when an Ajin is wrongly accused of murder, can Rangetsu stand idly by when she knows that Prince Tenyou has the power to prevent another horrible injustice?

The artwork is simply beautiful, but the pacing is too fast。 Rangetsu is already ready to throw hands and kill for the prince。 I liked the focus on some of the side characters。[rating from personal enjoyment not content]

Getting cutesy and the getting discovered was predictable but still an interesting world and characters

I don't think I can wait that long。 Toma's artwork and storytelling is just so amazing and I just need everything that she creates。 。。。more

A great installment to this new series! I think this would be a great series for a person interested in trying manga for the first time。 This volume we got to get to know some of the characters more and really show Rangetsu cares about。 She has cared about one thing for so long that she never had the space to figure out what she wanted and how she felt。 I can’t wait to see this grow with Tenyou and get to know more of the other Ajin in the palace。 I’m interested in the friendship of R and Teiga A great installment to this new series! Good for her? She’s so lucky? I know at some point there will be a payoff; slavery laws will be most likely abolished by the end of the series - it’s that kind of story。 But do I want to deal with everything that happens BEFORE that? I’m still deciding。 。。。more

The world Rei Toma has created is cruel, but in volume 2 of The King’s Beast, we get some hope for the future as Rangetsu starts to learn who she can trust in what is otherwise a pit of vipers。 I absolutely loved this 2nd installment of this series and if you haven’t checked it out yet, I highly recommend that you do。 You view a preview of both volumes on the @vizmedia website。I’m really enamored with our protagonist; she’s tenacious and her vengeful determination is pretty exciting to read abou The world Rei Toma has created is cruel, but in volume 2 of The King’s Beast, we get some hope for the future as Rangetsu starts to learn who she can trust in what is otherwise a pit of vipers。 I absolutely loved this 2nd installment of this series and if you haven’t checked it out yet, I highly recommend that you do。 You view a preview of both volumes on the @vizmedia website。I’m really enamored with our protagonist; she’s tenacious and her vengeful determination is pretty exciting to read about。 I also love seeing that Rei Toma’s artwork has improved in leaps in bounds。 Her characters have always been beautiful, but it’s nice seeing much more detailed background art than in her previous work。 It really helps bring the story to life。🍓✨And finally, while I know that this story will eventually lead to a romance。。。because come on, it has to, I am glad that it’s not at the forefront of the storytelling so far。 That just my personal preference。 I know that may surprise you, but I don’t really read shojo for the romance。 I just like reading stories written by women, for women。 。。。more

If being an ajin is bad, then being a female ajin is worse。 But why should that be? This volume of The King's Beast starts to answer that question when Prince Tennyou's servant discovers that Rangetsu is a woman, and he muses what, if anything, to do about it。 The answer lies in a hotbed of misogyny, failed understanding of sexuality, and good old-fashioned fear: once upon a time an emperor had a female beast servant and she turned out to be, like, a total slut who would sleep with anyone no mat If being an ajin is bad, then being a female ajin is worse。 But why should that be? This volume of The King's Beast starts to answer that question when Prince Tennyou's servant discovers that Rangetsu is a woman, and he muses what, if anything, to do about it。 The answer lies in a hotbed of misogyny, failed understanding of sexuality, and good old-fashioned fear: once upon a time an emperor had a female beast servant and she turned out to be, like, a total slut who would sleep with anyone no matter what their rank and then she used her evil whore-powers to basically take over the imperial court。 I use those hateful words on purpose here, because that's the light this unknown woman is presented in: a dangerous woman whose unbridled sexuality nearly destroyed the court。 Essentially, men found her attractive and blamed her for it; there's no indication that there was consent involved on her part at all, and while it could have been, given the way that ajin are treated, that's by no means a certainty。 When we consider that now female ajin are forced to serve a mandatory term in a brothel, that sounds awfully like misogynist racial stereotyping with roots in a belief that women are responsible for how men react to them。 That's the system Rangetsu grew up in, and the one she's actively rebelling against。 As she builds allies among the princes and their beast servants, she may be able to start to change the way the world functions。 It won't be fast and it won't be easy - and it won't even be all that fair at times, as we see this volume。 But at least it's a start。 。。。more

I honestly enjoyed this one a lot more than book two。 You can see the start of a series and friendships building with Rengetsu and other members of the palace。 There are a lot of dark moments in flashbacks and just the world as a whole, but the story was fairly lighthearted and solid。 I liked the continued development of the characters as well as the world itself, and a further dive into the politics of the palace。Cannot wait for book 3。

I was really loving the first volume because it has such a unique story with beautiful characters。 This volume was a little lacking, though。 The entire book almost nothing happened and the entire plot was all over the place。 In a word, I hate to say it, but it was rather boring。 That said, I still love the characters。 I just wish we had something more exciting to look forward to that could drive the plot forward。 There were a couple nice moments, but most of it was fluff or basic conflicts。 I'm I was really loving the first volume because it has such a unique story with beautiful characters。 This volume was a little lacking, though。 The entire book almost nothing happened and the entire plot was all over the place。 In a word, I hate to say it, but it was rather boring。 That said, I still love the characters。 I just wish we had something more exciting to look forward to that could drive the plot forward。 There were a couple nice moments, but most of it was fluff or basic conflicts。 I'm hoping to see more interesting plots in the future。 。。。more
